First off, I want to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year! 2002 is going to be a great year and a time for healing, remembering and some payback. After watching the recent tapes released by the government, I've got to say that I'm hoping we catch "you know who" and bring him to justice.

I'd also like to say, "Holy tired road warrior, Batman!" Between all the traveling I do with my day job and the wrestling on the weekends I'm one tired puppy these days. OK, I guess I'm a little old to be a puppy, how about a "big road dog." Yeah! That's it.

I was sitting on the plane this morning thinking, "Well, it's time to get my monthly article into Kayfabe Memories." I was thinking of what to write, as I always worry that I won't be able to remember anything more about the road and my USWA days. Alas, I always seem to pull something out of the hat and just as I was thinking how tired I was and how my brain needed sleep I thought . . . that's it! I should write about how the boys dealt with being tired on the road!

I'm sure everyone has gotten drowsy behind the wheel at one time or another. It happens to all of us and especially the boys who are traveling up and down the road to be a part of this business. Tommy "Wildfire" Rich and Doug Gilbert would keep me up by feeding me hot peppers. Not a good thing after hours of driving, evenings of doing the shows and then driving again. We would try to make it home if we could to Nashville, which is where I lived at the time, as well as Tommy and Doug and many of the boys. Nashville was a central point within the whole territory. But there were some times when we just couldn't do it, especially on Tuesdays. We would do the show at the Louisville Gardens and then the next night was Evansville. I still remember many Tuesday nights at the Days Inn right across the river where all the boys stayed.

Well, I had it easy, if I ever got tired, there were always hot peppers in the car - and beer and sometimes we'd just talk about anything we could to keep awake and it was usually wrestling-related, or angle-related as to what we were doing that week, or it was just plain old wrestling gossip - who is doing what and who is going where.

Of course, you never want to let on to the boys that you're getting tired because usually they were tired too and they would offer to take over. Well, two wrongs don't make a right. Yes, we should have just stayed in hotels all the time but it wasn't that easy. A hotel would easily eat away at what little we got paid, so we would try to make it home. More...
