Dino-saurus-rasslin-territorius?
Whatever happened to the term territory in our business? Well, the Good
'Ol Days in wrestling are just a legacy to be remembered by the elder's
of the generation created by Evolving Man! And we as a society look for
new and much younger (not necessarily talented in any form) pro
wrestling and/ or wrestler's, we must look back into the Crystal Ball of
Hard-Knocks. Back in the day when Lou Thez (for the younger minded, his
name meant wrestling) wrestled my Dad Ricky Romero in El Paso, Tx
(60's) for the late Gory Guererro a territory meant obtaining a
live audience at a WEEKLY pace and drawing fans, not ratings.
To step into the ring and look across from the legend of pro wrestling, my father remembers the day when you worked 60 minute draws and kept people's asses in their seat. Now, it's like Pre-*********** before S*x, by the time you go get the wife and kids a $5.00 hot dog, $6.00 beer and $40.00 t- shirt, 5 matches have passed, and the Main Event has to be souped up with 15 minutes of talking, 10 minutes of ass and about two holds…. it's obvious not just rasslin' has changed, but the media as well (Eminem, South Park, and even children's cartoons - whatever happened to the Roadrunner (Babyface) and Wile E. Coyote (Heel)? Oh well, I knew it was coming years ago, when my Dad went to a wrestling convention (in the 1970's) and this older promoter and his son from somewhere back East, were talking about beaming a satellite signal across the country and having wrestling in every town from N.Y. to L.A. Everyone at the meeting laughed! My father didn't. He knew these men were serious. He told me that story in the early 80's and I would believe a man who once faced men in this business and was a wrestler in his own right. Now, when I turn the radio on in my car and Eminem is blasting, or I turn on Saturday morning cartoons and the Power Puff Girls are ganging up on one another, and Saturday Wrestling is Monday Night Rating's, I guess I would be passe' for not marking out as well! Hell, major sponsors just might turn into Sponsor-saurus-extinctus! |
