Where Wrestling's Regional History Lives! |

So sorry I haven't been in touch as of
late... I've been all the way across the world (South Africa)
working for the IWF (International Wrestling Federation), and I had the
most interesting time! I was able to see some potential talent as well
as get over bigger than ANY Native American to come to that country, and
will be going back soon! I'm not TOTALLY snuffed out of the business
yet! The fans over there are still fresh, but respect a good worker as
in WRESTLING, and the gimmick second.
This piece is a little different than usual! Circa Amarillo Territory 1977. I was a young kid traveling during the summer with my dad and my brother Mark. Starting in Amarillo on Sat. morning at the CBS affiliate KFDA TV tapings, where fans would line up at 6 AM Sat. and the show didn't start till 10 AM. They did a 2 hour show which was aired that day at 5 PM in Amarillo. They made a copy and sent it with my dad, the famed "Blue Reel" the old 72mm or something. That day my dad was starting a feud with the "Blond Bomber" Bobby Jaggers (what a talent). My dad started his interview talking about being conservative and how someone like Jaggers (bleach blond hair, arrogant, party animal) didn't belong in that territory. Then they went to a video with Jaggers driving his convertible... with the blond hair, gold shades, flashy shirt, and GIRLS. We then took off to Colorado Springs (300 miles away!) then had to be in Albuquerque, New Mexico at 8 AM the next morning, do TV, then work that night. Next morning, on Monday, we headed out to El Paso, another 300 miles, for the evening show (Gory Guerrero), where we would cross the border (Juarez, Mexico) and it was a different world. My dad was like a king, everyone knew him, even though he didn't work Mexico. They got the TV feed from stateside. We had customized boots w/initials, shirts and pants made for almost nothing. Then Tuesday, we would hit Odessa, Tx (300 miles), Wednesday, Lubbock Tx. (250 miles) then back home in Amarillo on Thursday (150 miles),for a spot show on Friday. Then, we'd start over again! By the time they brought Jaggers in the next Saturday, the heat was so strong all over the territory - the fans wanted to kill him, and he hadn't even worked yet! The fans would listen to my dad when he said the sky was purple and they believed it. He would get the heels over as heels, which is something I think every company today needs to look at... our past. This will allow them to call the future. |
