Wrestling in the Aloha State - An introduction

First of all let me thank Kayfabe Memories for the opportunity to write about my experiences in the wrestling industry while in Hawaii many years ago (the 80's to be exact)... Man, am I getting old.

The Hawaiian territory had a lot of the stars from the industry go through it and the happenings that went on behind the scenes were more of a soap opera than what was sometimes seen on TV. Wrestling is a business that can bring out the best of people and also the worst. I will try to take the Fox News Channel approach of being fair and balanced. The things I have seen happen, if someone else told me they happened, would have caused me to tell them that they were lying. I will also tell you of my experiences with the young Duane Douglas Johnson (aka The Rock), the late Dean Hart (brother of Bret and the late Owen and many others.

I really don't know where to start, except from the beginning. I had enlisted in the Marine Corps, went through basic training at MCRD San Diego, and admin. school at Camp Pendleton, CA. My first permanent duty station was Marine Corps Air Station, Kanahoe Bay, Hawaii. We used to sit around the barracks and at approximately 4:30 (time may not be exact) we would all watch Polynesian Pro Wrestling on KSHO-TV26. It came on immediately following World Class Championship Wrestling. After watching the show for about a year, (the promotion was local), I told myself that I could fall (bump) just as good as those guys. So, I wrote a letter to Polynesian Pro Wrestling, seeing if there was any training, or how exactly was the way to become a wrestler. One day while in the Corps, I got a call from Lars Anderson (Larry Heinemi), who said he was interested in training me. We talked a while I made an appointment to go and meet with him.

The time came for my appointment so I got in my beat-up Monte Carlo and got on the Like Like (pronounced leaky leaky) Highway for the 30 minute drive to Honolulu. As I wound my way there, I passed the Neil S. Blaisdell Arena (where many of the matches took place). I finally found my destination and after parking in the garage, and getting out of the car, I went around to the front hop in the elevator and up to the 16th floor. I found Suite #1617, and knocked on the door. It opened and I was greeted by a large man by the name of Larry Heinemi (a.k.a. Lars Anderson). He invited me inside, where I met the Rock's grandmother, Lia Maivia. We sat down and started to talk, agreeing on a price for my training. I would have to pay so much up front and work off the rest, by setting up the ring, wrestling, etc.  More...
