Where Wrestling's Regional History Lives! |

Our
roster, when I joined Polynesian Pro Wrestling, consisted of Lars
Anderson, Royce Starr,
Farmer Boy Ipo, Leroy Brown,
Mighty Milo, Super Samoan
Sakalia, Robert Toronto,
Fue Manea, Super Fly Tui,
Matthew Zoe,
Ritchie Magnett, John Gray,
our announcer, and Little
Kevin, our timekeeper. Lia
had told me that her late husband, Peter, had trained the Samoan
wrestlers in Hawaii, because of that, the boys had a lot of respect for
him, and her. Lars
was PPW’s heavyweight champion, while Farmer Boy Ipo and Leroy Brown
were the tag team champs. Matt
Zoe was PPW’s 1983/1984 “Rookie of the Year”. Royce
Starr used to play football for the Seattle Seahawks.
He was injured, his first year, and one of his teammates
suggested he go into pro wrestling.
I can’t remember who trained him, but he decided to go to
Hawaii and work for Lia’s promotion.
Royce was always training for bodybuilding tournaments, when not
wrestling. He was a good
wrestler, but had problems with his interviews on TV.
We would start taping, and Royce would almost talk in a monotone.
When we went to do another take, Lars would reach in and “bitch
slap” Royce. That fired
him up enough to finish it with that take.
The first time this happened, I was by Royce, counting down the
time. It sure caught me by
surprise. Lars told me,
later, that that was the only way Royce could get the anger up for the
shoot. Lars
made me the NWA’s Commissioner in Hawaii.
I would announce the upcoming matches, levy fines, and take
verbal abuse from the guys I fined.
I loved it! Doing
this, and being the referee, got me recognized on the street.
People would come up to me and ask me about our upcoming matches,
and talk to me about the business. The
Samoan wrestlers were very proud of what they did.
They would not even tell their families what was going on.
I was working a tag team match with Super Samoan Sakalia and
Super Fly Tui challenging tag team champs Farmer Boy Ipo and Leroy
Brown. When Super Samoan
Sakalia had Leroy Brown in an arm bar, Leroy was selling it so well that
his wife threw a shoe at Saka, thinking her husband was really hurt.
This almost stopped me in my tracks.
A little bit later, during the same match, a young Samoan boy
threw a folding chair into the ring.
Tui couldn’t take it, and chased the boy, and his friends, up
into the bleachers, and chewed them out.
I stopped the match, and thought to myself, “what the H**L is
going on?” When Super Fly
Tui returned to the ring, I started the match, again.
Ipo and Leroy went on to retain their tag team belts. |
