- Scott Keith This is from
mid-1990, about two weeks before Verne Gagne declared bankruptcy,
although it later turned out that he lied to the court about the value
of his tape collection ($7,000 and "several million" is just A
WEE BIT of a difference in opinion, Verne) and wasn’t really broke. At
any rate, before the great beast finally dropped dead at the age of 40,
they decided to put some of the highlights of the 80s on tape and
release it commercially. The result is, I daresay, a much better look at
the past of the AWA than the PPV currently airing is, even at a mere 60
minutes. - Your host is
Eric Bischoff. I know, I know, so many jokes, so little time. - Chapter 1: Lee
Marshall takes us on a very compressed version of everything that
happened between the dawn of civilization and 1980. They find time to
work in that "Abraham Lincoln was the first NWA champion"
nonsense in again. - Chapter 2:
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". A series of clips presents
the major faces, heels and general freaks of the 80s time period for the
AWA. Notice how as the 80s begin, the major faces go from the
normal-looking likes of Crusher, Bockwinkel and Gagne to the more roided,
sleek, super-faces like Hogan, Hall, and the Road Warriors. Meanwhile,
the heels are generally fat and unattractive. It’s pretty weird seeing
the rookie Kokina, who would go on to become Yokozuna, as well as
"Porn star moustache" version Scott Hall (with puffy hair to
boot), a skinny Curt Hennig, and VERY skinny jobbers Brian Knobbs &
Jerry Sagnovich first honing their act as the Nasty Boys. - Chapter 3:
Championship matches. Series of longish clips here, detailing the World
title changes of the 80s. - We begin with Verne Gagne, of course, as he wrestles his first "retirement" match against Nick Bockwinkel, getting the pin off a backdrop suplex to retain his World title. He would "retire" with the title, and thus become the only person to do so. Bockwinkel was awarded the title shortly after, because that’s the way they did things in the AWA. More...
