Founded by wrestler/promoter Cowboy Bill Watts
in 1979. After leaving his job as booker for the Oklahoma-based company headed
by NWA member promoter Leroy McGuirk, Watts formed his own office, Mid-South
Sports, Inc. (without NWA affiliation) and took over former McGuirk cities in
Louisiana and Mississippi.
By 1982, Watts had gained control of McGuirk's
old towns in Oklahoma as well, and began to cement his reputation as one of the
best promoters, bookers, and television producers in the industry, building his
circuit into a powerhouse off the strength of his popular Mid-South Wrestling
syndicated television show.
As the business changes of the 1980's began to
take hold, Watts dropped the "Mid-South Wrestling" trade name (though
still did business as Mid-South Sports) and took on the brand name
"Universal Wrestling Federation." (See
the UWF section).
