Backed
by legendary music producer Rick Rubin, Smoky Mountain Wrestling was led by
manager-turned-promoter Jim Cornette, with a creative team that included such
names as Sandy Scott, Brian Hildebrand, and Mark Curtis.
Attempting
to bring back old-school territory wrestling, this group promoted shows
throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
However, the wrestling landscape had changed and the increased cost of
distributing syndicated television, coupled with a changing perception of what
is and isn't "major league" led Cornette to form an alliance with
Vince McMahon's Titan Sports (the WWF).
By
late-1995, gates had dwindled and Cornette shut down operations.
