- Edward Pardue Eerie. I'm writing this column, and I cant get the tune of the 1980's song by EUROPE out of my head. The Superbowl of Wrestling, held in August of 1995, was do or die time for Smoky Mountain Wrestling. For Cornette and company, this major supercard, held before a sold out Knoxville Civic Coliseum, was truly indeed The Final Countdown. This card was a lot like the old Starrcade cards. You know the ones I am talking about... JCP promoted cards and not that garbage thrown out by WCW years later. Cornette decided to host several promotions on this one historic night. It was a night of awesome wrestling and the people in the stands did NOT leave without seeing professional wrestling at its finest. Two matches represented the USWA in " enemy territory " at the Superbowl. In the first match, PG-13 defended their USWA tag team belts against the makeshift team of Curtis Thompson and Jackie Fulton. Wolfie D and JC Ice were accompanied to ringside by Randy Hales. Through a miracle of some sort, PG-13 kept the belts, though Thompson and Fulton put up a heck of a fight. Later in the evening, USWA champion Billy Jack Haynes would loose the USWA title to Brad Armstrong. Armstrong is one of the most underrated performers in the world at this point, and Billy Jack is a big, strong, powerful man with some ability, so the match went well, with SMW's favorite son coming out on top. Marty Jannetty (former " Rocker " with Shawn Michaels) defended his Mid-Western Heavyweight title against FUTURE "Rocker" (with Marty Jannetty of all people) Al Snow. Snow and Jannetty are two fabulous athletes and put on a great show of endurance and in ring abilities. The match these guys had was a definite five star match. Snow came out on top that night, and proved to Jannetty that he was indeed TOUGH ENOUGH to take the gold from him. Excellent match.Bob Armstrong took on Barry Buchanan (THE PUNISHER). I am not trying to disrespect either of these guys at all, but this match was horrible. Lot of punching and kicking with absolutely NO technique shown by either guy. Armstrong does a good job of "selling" some shots, but goes down in defeat. Yeah, Cornette found someone who could take Bob Armstong out for him, and his name was <shudder> THE PUNISHER! The World Champion defended his title that night. No, I do NOT mean Hulk Hogan (WCW) or Diesel (WWF). I mean, quite simply, the WORLD CHAMPION. Dan Severn, NWA World Champion, defended the title against former SMW champion, Bobby Blaze. More...
