Memphis Mafia and Flower Power Wrestling was on the verge of mainstream media in 1983, it was only a year away from Hogan’s WWF title victory, the rock n wrestling connection, and the eventual start of the decline of territorial wrestling, yet some of the best action was yet to come from this little British Columbia promotion. The team of Moose Morrowski and Al Tomko had won the International tag titles and were running roughshod over the competition. They defended the titles until being stripped of the belts by NWA representative Jack Windsor. Windsor had been brought in to sort out the troublemakers and bring order to the NWA sanctioned promotion. Igor Volkoff had an impressive year forming a popular team with Mighty Igor and winning the Canadian title from Moose Morrowski March 21/83. On the same card Terry Adonis and Tim Flowers combined to claim the International tag titles that had been up for grabs. The two battled top teams such as Mr. Pro and Jerry Morrow who they wrestled in a fence match early on in the year. The blonds also had Mr. Unpredictable Bruiser Costa in their corner for several matches. Igor Volkoff had his hands full defending the Canadian title against former champ Al Tomko. Volkoff wrestled Tomko in a boxing match; the match was sanctioned in the hopes of keeping Tomko from being able to use his trademark foreign objects. Volkoff also turned back the challenge of Terry Adonis, he used the figure four leglock to finish Adonis off but was disqualified for refusing to break the hold. Bruiser Costa attempted to save Adonis but was met in the ring by Dean Ho who came to Volkoff’s aid. Igor also put an end to Grizzly Evans in British Columbia when he defeated the rule breaker in a “Loser Leave Town Match” March 7/83. The big news of early 1983 was the appearance of the masked Black Avenger (who was easily recognizable as Moose Morrowski) and his impending battle with fellow masked wrestler Mr. Pro. The feud went to a challenge match mask vs. mask with the winner a thousand dollars richer. The match a hard fought battle ended when Mr. Pro unmasked himself revealing veteran “Professor” Buck Ramstead. Ramstead/Pro put his mask on the Avenger’s head sideways and pummeled Morrowski before pinning the giant opponent after a neck breaker for the win. Mr. Pro continued to wrestle minus the mask in 1983. More...
