Taking
over the Vancouver territory from Sandor Kovacs in 1977, former Winnipeg
promoter Al Tomko (who had previously been associated with Verne Gagne's AWA),
held standing membership in the National Wrestling Alliance until the early
1980's when he became embroiled in a promotional feud with fellow NWA promoter
Stu Hart.
Prior
to his expansion into neighboring Alberta, Tomko had worked closely with NWA
colleague Don Owen's Portland, Oregon promotion with the rosters of the two
promotions throughout the late 70's and early 80's being practically
interchangeable.
Operating under the "All Star Wrestling" brand name, Tomko launched
his own "sanctioning body" after his split from the NWA called the
"Universal Wrestling Alliance."
