- Rich Palladino In 1984, former three-time NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion, Angelo Savoldi, with the assistance of his three sons, Mario, Tom and Joe, formed International Championship Wrestling. ICW was not part of "The Big Three" of the 1980's wrestling world - WWF, NWA or AWA, but rather ventured on its' own to create a new force in Professional Wrestling.ICW boasted an impressive roster of several top stars throughout the business. This group consisted of well-known independent "free agents" like The Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika), King Tonga (WCW's Meng), Kevin Sullivan (with The Fallen Angel - Nancy "Woman" Sullivan), Austin Idol, "Playboy" Buddy Rose, Ox Baker and Mark Lewin to several top stars from Puerto Rico's World Wrestling Council (WWC) such as WWC Universal Heavyweight. Champion, Carlos Colon, The Sheepherders (The Bushwhackers), Dory Funk, Jr., The Invaders, Hercules Ayala, The Super Medic, The Rockers (Al Perez and "Jumpin'" Joe Savoldi) and the maniacal Abdullah the Butcher (managed by "Lord" Jonathan Boyd). In my opinion, Thatcher and Thesz were one of the best announcing duos of the 1980's. It's just too bad that they were only present at the promotion's start. The WWC Universal Heavyweight and Tag Team Championships were the main titles defended in ICW. The championships were never referred to as "WWC" titles, nor were they referred to as property of ICW either. One of ICW's highlights was a card held in Bangor, Maine on February 27, 1985 as the WWC Universal Heavyweight title changed hands when former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Dory Funk, Jr. captured the belt from Carlos Colon, ending the Puerto Rican legend's second of over fifteen title reigns. This Universal Heavyweight title change was also historical as it marked the first time a WWC title ever changed hands outside of Puerto Rico. More...
