- Kris Zellner This month we will look at Wahoo McDaniel and his career in the Mid-Atlantic area. Wahoo first became big in the Carolinas around 1973 and quickly became the top draw, feuding with the top heels of the area such as: Prof. Boris Malenko, The Super Destroyer (Don Jardine), Ole and Gene Anderson, Angelo Mosca, and Ric Flair and he got some NWA title shots against Jack Brisco as well. Wahoo’s first real big feud was with Malenko and it got started when Wahoo knocked out Boris’ false teeth in October 1975. They feuded for a few months in some brutal matches, but one of Wahoo’s and Mid-Atlantic’s biggest feud’s was right around the corner. In January 1976, Ric Flair amazingly returned from being injured in the horrible plane crash and quickly became the top heel in JCP. He came back as a second to Angelo Mosca in his matches with Wahoo and interfered to help Angelo win some matches. Then, Flair made his ring return in Greensboro, North Carolina on January 31, 1976 against Wahoo, defeating him by countout. Over February and March, Flair tore up Wahoo’s headdress on TV and Flair nearly blinded Wahoo in a match, which set up a feud that did huge business for many months in the territory. During the feud, Flair and Wahoo traded the Mid-Atlantic belt back and forth several times, and Wahoo even had a small feud going with The Mongol’s and their manager Boris Malenko. In September 1976, Wahoo knocked out Malenko’s teeth again and ran The Mongol’s out of the area by defeating Bolo Mongol in a hair vs. hair match. During the feud with Flair, JCP had a short run of six-man matches featuring Wahoo, Rufus R. Jones, and Andre The Giant vs The Anderson’s and Ric Flair that drew big houses. It was also during this time that Wahoo got some matches against then NWA champ Terry Funk, but unfortunately, also suffered a torn ligament in his back that forced Wahoo to take some time off. Wahoo came back and restarted his feud with Flair and had some tag matches at the house shows with Paul Jones as his partner against Ric Flair and Angelo Mosca. In December 1976, Ric Flair and Greg Valentine started feuding with Ole and Gene Anderson for the NWA Tag Team titles and on Christmas Night in Greensboro, North Carolina, Flair and Valentine won the tag belts. After the match Flair, Valentine, and Blackjack Mulligan stomped away at Ole and Gene until they were unable to fight back. To everyone’s surprise, Wahoo, who was a known enemy of the Anderson’s, came into the ring and helped out Ole and Gene… the crowd went nuts. Wahoo finished 1976 off winning the Most Popular Wrestler of the year. More...
