- Kris Zellner This month we will look at the great moments that happened in the anchor city of the Crockett territory, Greensboro, North Carolina. The Greensboro Coliseum was the major arena for JCP and it had the largest seating capacity (16,000 seats) out of all of the top arenas in the area, and it was a Sunday night tradition for years in the area. Greensboro got almost all of the major title changes, the "Cadillac Cup" cards that Crockett ran once a year, almost all of the major house show angles, and had one of great ring announcers in Tom Miller. Some of the most important moments that happened in the Greensboro coliseum are: April 7, 1974- Ric Flair and Rip Hawk vs. Paul Jones and Bob Bruggers for the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Title. Flair and Hawk win the belts and it also marks the first championship that Flair held in the area. July 3, 1975- Harley Race vs. Johnny Valentine for the U.S. Title. Valentine defeats Race in a great match. November 9, 1975- U.S. Title Tournament. Due to the horrific plane crash, Johnny Valentine had to vacate his United States title, so there was a tournament held in front of a sold out Coliseum featuring 16 of the top names in the business such as: Rufus R. Jones, Steve Strong, Terry Funk, Red Bastien, Johnny Weaver, Gene Anderson, Ole Anderson, Paul Jones, Tiger Conway Jr., Blackjack Mulligan, Harley Race, Ken Patera, Dusty Rhodes, Superstar Graham, Prof. Boris Malenko, and Wahoo McDaniel. In the finals, Funk defeated Paul Jones to win the title. February 1, 1976- Ric Flair’s return match vs. Wahoo McDaniel for the Mid-Atlantic Title. This was Flair’s 1st match back from the awful plane crash and the Carolinas were never the same after that. October 16, 1976- Ric Flair vs. Wahoo McDaniel for the Mid-Atlantic title. Flair regains his title in one of the greatest feuds ever. December 25, 1976- Ric Flair and Greg Valentine vs. Ole and Gene Anderson for the NWA World Tag Titles. Flair and Valentine win the belts, all 4 men bleed like crazy, Ole gets sent out on a stretcher, and started a great heel vs. heel feud that will always be remembered by the fans of JCP. More...
