The history of
Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling goes all the way back to 1935 when
Jim Crockett Sr. started promoting in the Carolina and Virginia areas.
He promoted in the area for 38 years until his son, Jim Crockett Jr.
took over for his retiring father. The area was known at the time as
Eastern States Championship Wrestling, then when Jim Crockett Jr. took
over, he renamed it Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and the name
stuck until 1986. MACW taped their TV shows at WRAL (Raleigh) from
1973-81 and WPCQ (Charlotte) from 1981-83. In mid-1983, they
started taping their shows live from the arenas. It was some of the most
exciting wrestling ever shown on TV and the crowds were very rabid about
their heroes and villains. The main announcers were Bob Caudle, David
Crockett, and Johnny Weaver although there were some other announcers
here and there, but they didn’t stay too long with the promotion. MACW
was a very influential member of the NWA and Jim Crockett Jr. was
president of the NWA in 3 terms (1980-82), (1985-86), and (1987-91.) The
main cities of the area were in (North Carolina): Winston-Salem,
Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Asheville, and Fayetteville, (South
Carolina): Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, and Spartanburg, and
(Virginia): Roanoke, Norfolk, Richmond, and Hampton. Crockett
promoted cards in association with Maple Leaf Wrestling out of Canada
which was promoted by Frank Tunney until his death in 1983. Frank’s
nephew Jack took over, but when the promotional wars heated up, Crockett
felt he could no longer spare his top guys to Tunney, because of his
long relationship with the McMahon’s of the WWF and it eventually
drove Tunney to sell the Toronto group to the WWF in 1984. More...
