- Jeff Luce Welcome back fans of Southeastern Championship Wrestling. This month we’ll look at “The Universal Heartthrob” Austin Idol’s time in Southeastern. Very few could lay claim to being as over with the fans than Austin Idol, and the people paid their money to see Idol. Idol had a special chemistry with the fans of Southeastern, and he had a special chemistry with the wrestlers he worked with, never giving a bad program. Idol had so many great feuds, so if I miss one I duly apologize and am not slighting anyone in the least. Idol vs. Jos LeDuc: How can you describe this feud between these two? One word: WILD!!! LeDuc and Idol seemed to have this burning desire of hate towards each other. They feuded over the Alabama Heavyweight Championship. These two tore into each other like no other I had ever seen before. They had a multitude of gimmick matches, with LeDuc gaining the nod over Idol using his illegal tactics. They drew plenty of money with this feud, and it was played out the right way. So, when Idol got the better of LeDuc it really meant something. LeDuc did the most heinous thing I had ever seen in professional wrestling to this point. It was during a “Canadian Lumberjack” arm wrestling competition between the two men. What is a “Canadian Lumberjack” arm wrestling match you ask? It is when a lit candle is place on each side of the table. When you win, it will cause your opponent to be burnt by the candle. Early in the contest it seemed LeDuc had control, but wait Idol started coming back. Sensing that losing may be inevitable, LeDuc grabbed one of the burning candles with his free hand and proceeded to push it right into Idol’s eye. I was mortified. Idol sold it like he was blind, and LeDuc as only he could do made like a madman. This added more fuel to the fire. Idol was out for a while, presumably blinded. Then he made his triumphant return, and won the blow off match. Idol also garnered the Alabama heavyweight title, and this feud was won by Idol, by an eyelash (pardon the pun). Idol vs. “Dr. D” David Shultz: What could this feud add to the legacy Idol was making in Southeastern that the LeDuc feud did not. It helped cement Idol in the minds of the fans as their hero. The guy they could always depend on to win out over evil. This feud, while short lived had some of the most exciting elements I’d ever seen. This feud if my memory is serving me correctly occurred right before Shultz went to the WWF, and was directly involved with the Wayne Ferris feud. It was a similar angle to the Dusty Rhodes/El Santo (Masked Assassin) that occurred in Florida. More...
