- Cole Meade On May 22, 1992 Smoky Mountain Wrestling held a title tournament to crown the first ever Undisputed SMW Heavyweight Champion. This 8-man, one night, single elimination tournament would feature some of the indy's and Mid South's most famous wrestlers. Among the 8 elite men competing were Robert Gibson, The Dirty White Boy, Paul Orndorff, Tim Horner, Buddy Landel, Jimmy Golden, Dixie Dynamite (Scott Armstrong in a mask) and "Prime Time" Brian Lee (whom at the time was a blonde pretty boy face). THE FIRST ROUND The first round featured Gibson over Jimmy Golden in a fairly decent match considering the two men were veterans of the sport. While Gibson was set for the semi's, he would soon learn he would be meeting none other than Mr. Wonderful in the 2nd round after Orndorff got a not-so-clean win over "White Lightning" Tim Horner in the longest and one of the best matches of the night. In the opposing bracket, we would see the opposite of what everyone expected. First, it would be Tony Anthony "The Dirty White Boy" toppling co-promoter Bob Armstrong's son, Scott Armstrong (Dixie Dy-No-Mite) and then a newcomer to the sport Brian Lee topple long time veteran "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel. At this point it was sure that Lee was going to be given quite a push in SMW after eliminating the likes of Landel in the first round. SEMI FINALS Up next, were the semi's. After four men had already been through one match, they were ready for the second of a hopeful three match victory in this one night. Up first was Brian Lee vs. the Dirty White Boy. For most of the match, Anthony owned Lee pummeling him with his veteran heel like tactics which got over well with the crowd might I add. However, once again, it was Lee who got an upset pin out of nowhere. Although Lee got the victory, it wasn't sure if he could make it to the finals after the beating DWB gave him. Next, we saw Paul Orndorff again continue his winning ways over Rock 'n Roll Express member Robert Gibson in a not so clean victory but an effective one which would set up the finals for the first ever SMW Heavyweight Champion.
