- Cole Meade
After a very long hiatus from Kayfabe
Memories I'm back with the third post for Smoky
Mountain Wrestling. I do deeply apologize as
I've been getting my own Indy Promotion afloat
and running a wrestling memorabilia shop, but
I'm back and ready to get down to business. In
this Edition of the SMW Report I will cover
SMW's biggest event of all time, The Superbowl
of Wrestling.
SMW's Superbowl of Wrestling took place on
August 4, 1995 at the Civic Coliseum in
Knoxville, TN. It had proven to be one of, if
not the biggest drawing crowds in SMW history
with some 5,000 fans in attendance for a gate of
roughly $37,500. The card was packed with stars
from all over the United States from SMW itself
to the WWF. Several future WWF superstars were
even involved on this big event. Below are all
the results of SMW's version of the Superbowl.
In the opening bout Brian Amstrong (later
renamed the Road Dogg by the WWF) got a victory
over another future WWF Star at the time in D-Lo
Brown. The match was fast paced and the two
battled back & forth & with WWF scouts
in attendance both men pulled out all the stops
ending with the Desert Storm veteran reigning
victorious in only 8:00.
In the next bout it was originally scheduled for
The HeadBangers to meet the Steiner Brothers in
a classic tag match but it seemed at the last
minute the Steiners pulled out. The
replacements, were none other than Chris
Michaels & Flash Flanagan. Still a decent
fought out match, the fans were disappointed
that the Steiners no showed. The ending came
when Mosh made the cover on Michaels for the win
in 11:40.
From there USWA Tag Champs PG-13 (J.C. Ice &
Wolfie D) scored a somewhat easy win over
Fantastic's member Jackie Fulton & former
NWA jobber from the late 80's, Curtis Thompson.
Following that, wrestling legend
"Bullet" Bob Armstrong was set to meet
The Punisher (now WWF's Bull Buchanon).
Surprisingly, Bob did the quick job to the up
& coming star without much complaint. This
would only further the Armstrong/Cornette feud,
however. More...
