- Edward Pardue In February of 1995, a relative unknown made his debut in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. While most fans know Al Snow as the WWF star who carried a mannequin head around for the better part of the last three years, Snow got his first big break in the business in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. In Lenoir, NC, with the song " YOU'RE SO VAIN " blaring in the background, Al Snow defeated legendary jobber George South and put SMW on notice that he meant business. Well... kind of. Snow's character in SMW was more of a smart aleck. Think of a young Jerry Lawler or a very athletic Jim Cornette and you've got the picture. The only kind of business Snow meant was funny business. I am not really sure what Jim Cornette had envisioned for Snow, but a tragic turn of events forced Snow into the SMW limelight. Wrestling legend " Hot Stuff " Eddie Gilbert, in the middle of a SMW war with the Rock and Roll Express, ventured to Puerto Rico. It was a trip Gilbert would never return from. Eddie Gilbert suffered a heart attack and died while on tour there. Cornette needed to fill a void left by Gilbert ( which, in MY opinion, could NEVER be done ) and he chose Al Snow to team with Gilbert's partner, Unabomb ( Glen Jacobs, who is known to wrestling fans today as KANE ) in his war against the Rock and Roll Express.Snow and Unabomb complimented each other extremely well, with Snow providing the quickness and high flying moves and Unabomb providing the power and size. Their matches with Ricky and Robert were extremely good. However, Al Snow's promos were unbelievable. This guy should have his own TV show, he's really that funny. If you only know Al as the guy with HEAD, get some SMW tapes circa spring of 1995... he is classic. One promo had Snow and Unabomb imitating the Rock and Roll Express. Snow had on a blonde wig and Unabomb, who was impersonating Robert Gibson, had a note from his ( Robert's ) mother. Snow was not very happy with "Robert" , as the note was in sign language. ( Robert Gibson's mother is a deaf mute and while I do not in ANY way condone making fun of the handicapped, this promo has to be seen to be believed.) He then went on to insult Ricky and Robert themselves. It was a classic "Snow" job. More...
