- Chuck Merkich Even though Southwest Championship Wrestling came into existence in 1978, they wouldn't have a Southwest Tag Tteam title until 1981 but it quickly became one of the most hotly contested championships in the world. Some of the greatest teams in the in the history of professional wrestling battled on a nightly basis for the honor of being the top tandem in the area. The first recognized champions were the team of Tully Blanchard and Gino Hernandez (Charles Wolfe). Also known as the Dynamic Duo, the pair is arguably the greatest and most well known team in the history of SWCW. The Duo dropped the titles to Wahoo McDaniel & Terry Funk but regained them shortly after. They didn't remain champions for long however as the young, up and coming team of Ricky Morton & Ken Lucas defeated them for the belts. These two teams would go on to trade the titles back and forth through out most of 1982 until Bob Sweetan & Dick Slater defeated Blanchard and a substitute for a no-show Hernandez during October in Odessa, TX. Slater and Sweetan were stripped of the titles for pinning the substitute and a tournament was held for the vacant championship in Corpus Christi, Tx. In December, Morton & Lucas defeated the Don Carson managed team of the Grapplers (Len Denton & Tony Anthony) in the finals to become the new champions. Morton & Lucas didn't hold the titles for long as the Grapplers dethroned them a month later. They held on to the belts until March when they dropped them to the reunited Dynamic Duo, who had to vacate the titles immediately after the win when Blanchard attacked Hernandez with his half of the championship belts. Hernandez left the promotion soon after and unfortunately passed away in 1986 from a drug overdose. The Grapplers became 2 time champions in April, though it's unknown if they won the titles via a tournament or were rewarded them. They kept the belts until May losing them to the Sheepherders team of Jonathon Boyd and Luke Williams. Bobby Jaggers soon stepped in to replace Boyd who was badly injured in an auto accident but the titles once again were vacated in July when Williams attacked Jaggers after losing a non-title match to Bob Sweetan & Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) in San Antonio,Tx. Jaggers wasn't without a half of the tag team championship for long as he and Buddy Moreno (Omar Atlas) defeated Bob Sweetan & Ken Timbs in the finals of a 4 team tournament on 8/29/83. Moreno & Scott Casey, who was subbing for an injured Jaggers who had his arm broken a week earlier by Luke Williams, lost the belts less than a month later to Timbs & Eric Embry who were better know as the first incarnation of the Fabulous Blondes.
