- Will Gonzalez The year is 1981 and many locals say it was the year that put SWCW on the map, the talent pool at the time included some big names and future stars. Some of the stars in the area were: Tully Blanchard, Gino Hernandez, Tank Patton, Col Buck Robley, Moon Mulligan, Dick Slater, Eddy Mansfield, Black Gorman, Larry Lane, Dory and Terry Funk, Scott Casey, Ivan Putski, Wahoo McDaniel, Chavo Guerrero Sr, Tiger Conway, Terry Allen (A young Magnum TA), Ray Hernandez (Who would go to have a great career as Hercules), Tom Pritchard, and many great stars. Stars from around the world who made brief stops in SWCW were The Sheik who had a brief feud with Scott Casey after burning his face, Tito Santana who along with Ivan Putski were former WWWF tag team champions, AWA Champion Nick Bockwinkle, Billy Robinson, Buddy Landel, and Tony Atlas. The TV tapings were held every Monday nights and more and more stations were beginning to pick up SWCW the English announcers changed on 3 different occasions the first was Gene Kelly, who was then replaced by Gene Goodsen. He had a no nonsense approach that won fans over instantly, and week in and week out he gave the best commentating anywhere. On the Spanish side was San Antonio Sportscaster Rapido "Cuco" Rodriguez, a local favorite among the Hispanic audience he too bought a no nonsense approach and the local fans loved it. Back to the wrestling side Tully Blanchard who was the champ in the beginning of the year was stripped of the title for not defending his title within 30 days, an angle had him in a car accident?? (This is never verified so I do not know if it was legit or not). A new tournament was held in San Antonio to determine the new champion and The winner was the former NWA Champion Terry Funk who won a one night tournament. This did not sit well with former champion Blanchard who was on a quest to regain his title, but Wahoo McDaniel would beat Funk a few months later and this did not sit well with Tully. More...
