- Manuel Gonzalez Hello. Just back on time to present to all of you, the WWC fans, a recap of events that took place on the promotion 21 years ago, 1981. Another great year for WWC who solidified themselves as the # 1 promotion in Puerto Rico in the 80's. You will see why.January was the first month of the year and on the first card of the year Carlos Colón faced Harley Race for the NWA title. The North American Tag Team champions at the beginning of the year were Dutch Mantel and Danny Condrey. On that show there were a Battle Royal with $5,000 for the winner. Debuting for WWC on that show were one of the wildest tag team ever to wrestle in Puerto Rico, The Sheepherders, Luke & Butch. Another newcomer was Buck Robley, that I believe was the new booker then. Maravilla, who was also known in the states as one of the Castillo brothers, returned to the promotion. Carlos Colón and Invader defeated Danny Condrey and Dutch Mantel for the North American Titles in a televised match, a title change that was not so common those days. Killer Karl Krupp debuted in Puerto Rico and did a lot of things with his forehead claw. There were a tag team named The Destroyers, but I don't know who they were. Carlos Colón was sent out due to an 'injury' by Dutch Mantel on his first North American Tag Team Title defense. In February, Dominican Wrestler Pedro Valdez, that was also known as 'Stone Hand', wrestled for WWC. Pierre Martel returned for the promotion and teamed with Invader to gain revenge of the Colón injury. The Medics, that I believe that at the time were Johnny Rodz and Jose Estrada, wrestled in WWC. That was the first Medics here since 1977. Maravilla, that was used mostly as a jobber, upset Danny Condrey (better known worldwide these days as Dennis Condrey of Midnight Express fame) and won the Caribbean Title. Chief Jay Strongbow came in, as well as Jack Brisco. Another Japanese wrestler, Haru Sonoda, appeared those days, brought in by Hugo Savinovich. Finally, the last day of the month Los Pastores (Sheepherders) defeated Carlos Colón and Invader to win the North American Tag Team Title. Jerry Brisco came into the territory in March to join his brother Jack and were the first team to face Los Pastores for the tag team. Pretty Boy Larry Sharpe returned to WWC. After a couple of months out of WWC, Ciclón Negro returned and was Invader 1's partner to face Los Pastores. More...
