 - Kris Zellner

This month we will look at wrestlers who were names elsewhere, but didn’t make a big impact in the Mid-Atlantic area.

Tito Santana- Tito started wrestling in the Mid-Atlantic area in 1978 as a lowcard babyface. In fact, Tito went by the name of Richard Blood which was the real name of Ricky Steamboat. Tito didn’t last but about a year and eventually went on to the WWF, where he became half of the WWF Tag champs with Ivan Putski.

Larry Zbyszko- Larry wrestled also as a lowcard babyface for almost a year in 1975-76. Zbyszko was best remembered from his tenure as being a whipping boy for the heel team of Ric Flair and Greg Valentine. Zbyszko left the area in late 1976 and returned to the WWWF where two years later he became half of the WWWF Tag champs with Tony Garea.

Brutus Beefcake- Good 'ol Ed Leslie made a stop in the Carolinas in the Winter of 1982 going by the name of Dizzy Ed Hogan. Dizzy was most remembered in his three month stint for trying to slam the One Man Gang and win the $7,500 that Sir Oliver Humperdink had put up to anyone who could slam him. Dizzy Hogan would soon leave the area for the AWA and then a year later he went to the WWF and become Brutus Beefcake.

John Tatum- “Hollywood” John made his entrance in the Carolinas in late 1984 as a lowcard heel, then he moved his way up to midcard in 1985 where he stayed until he left later in the year. John moved on to the World Class area and got hooked up with a young lady named Missy Hyatt and the rest is history.

Len Denton- Len worked in JCP twice in his career, once in 1978-79 as a lowcard babyface and then in 1981, with his new found gimmick “The Grappler”. The Grappler only stayed in the area for a couple of months teaming with the Super Destroyer (Scott Irwin) and they were pretty good, but Super D went on to a full time gig in Atlanta and Len went on to Mid-South where he became a high midcard heel.

Austin Idol- Austin had a stint in JCP as a high midcard heel between late 81-early 82. Austin was mostly used in singles but had some mild success with Ivan Koloff as his tag team partner. Then, Austin started going around the matches on TV with a video camera  to tape future opponents, but before that angle could go through, he left the area, which he is famous for. Austin would’ve been a bigger star in the business if he hadn’t burned the promoters all the time. More...
