 - Kris Zellner

This month we will look at the year 1984 and how it was one of the most pivotal years in the history of Jim Crockett Promotions.

January

Baron Von Raschke and Ernie Ladd debut in the area.

Greg Valentine turns babyface after getting turned on by Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr.

8th – Don Kernodle & Bob Orton Jr. beats Dory Funk Jr. & Jimmy Valiant in a tournament final for the NWA World Tag Team Titles (that were vacated by Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood after Steamboat’s “retirement”) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

20th – Dick Slater apparantly defeats Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Title in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, but a second referee saw that Bob Orton Jr. interfered in Slater’s behalf and reversed the decision. Slater then steals the NWA title which is retrieved and given back to Flair.

25th – Angelo Mosca Jr. defeated Ivan Koloff for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title in Shelby, North Carolina. Koloff was given the belt by Dick Slater in December 1983.

February

Dick Slater makes his own “World Heavyweight Title” and proclaims himself the real world champ.

Jim Crockett offers Ricky Steamboat $10,000 to come out of retirement and sign a contract to meet Ric Flair on March 17th. Steamboat would accept a couple of weeks later.

March

Junkyard Dog, Pez Whatley, Brian Adias, Adrian Street, Stan Hansen (for a couple of matches), debut in the area.

Dory Funk Jr. turns on Angelo Mosca Jr. during a tag-team match against Don Kernodle & Ivan Koloff.

4th – Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood defeats Don Kernodle & Bob Orton Jr. for the NWA World Tag Team Titles in Charlotte, North Carolina.

7th – Mark Youngblood defeated Dick Slater in a 8-man tournament for the NWA TV title in Spartanburg, South Carolina.    More...
