we will look at the year 1984 and how it was one of the most pivotal
years in the history of Jim Crockett Promotions. January Baron Von
Raschke and Ernie Ladd debut in the area. Greg
Valentine turns babyface after getting turned on by Dick Slater &
Bob Orton Jr. 8th
– Don Kernodle & Bob Orton Jr. beats Dory Funk Jr. & Jimmy
Valiant in a tournament final for the NWA World Tag Team Titles (that
were vacated by Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood after Steamboat’s
“retirement”) in Charlotte, North Carolina. 20th
– Dick Slater apparantly defeats Ric Flair for the NWA World
Heavyweight Title in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, but a second referee
saw that Bob Orton Jr. interfered in Slater’s behalf and reversed the
decision. Slater then steals the NWA title which is retrieved and given
back to Flair. 25th
– Angelo Mosca Jr. defeated Ivan Koloff for the Mid-Atlantic
Heavyweight Title in Shelby, North Carolina. Koloff was given the belt
by Dick Slater in December 1983. February Dick Slater makes his own “World Heavyweight Title” and proclaims himself the real world champ. Jim
Crockett offers Ricky Steamboat $10,000 to come out of retirement and
sign a contract to meet Ric Flair on March 17th. Steamboat
would accept a couple of weeks later. March Junkyard Dog, Pez Whatley, Brian Adias, Adrian Street, Stan Hansen (for a couple of matches), debut in the area. Dory Funk Jr. turns on Angelo Mosca Jr. during a tag-team match against Don Kernodle & Ivan Koloff. 4th – Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood defeats Don Kernodle & Bob Orton Jr. for the NWA World Tag Team Titles in Charlotte, North Carolina. 7th
– Mark Youngblood defeated Dick Slater in a 8-man tournament for the
NWA TV title in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
