Where Wrestling's Regional History Lives! |
|
|
- Larry Stoy This
month, we will take a different view of this legendary territory known
as Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling.
Having watched this region from the late 60's to it's
metamorphosis into World Championship Wrestling in the early 90's, I
have many vivid and exciting memories of MACW.
So, this month, I will attempt to entertain you with my own
little fantasy card.
Now,
I know that there is literally thousand's of matches that could be made
using the names of the great wrestlers that have worked for Jim Crockett
Promotions. This card is
just a collection of one combination.
I have tried to select matches that I would have paid to see.
I will also provide my booking of these matches.
Remember, this is just one man's opinion.
Enjoy!
Since
this is my November article, and this month has the birthday of one of
wrestling's most revered events, STARRCADE,
let's have this card take place on Thanksgiving evening.
The venue has to be the Greensboro Coliseum, where it all started
way back in 1983. Let's go
to the matches! OPENING
EVENT
Charlie
Fulton vs. George "Two Ton" Harris
I
selected this match as the proverbial "curtain jerker" because
these two men are two of my favorite enhancement workers from JCP.
Charlie Fulton, a solid wrestler in his own right, taking on one
of the best role-playing heels in the business.
Harris knows how to work a crowd, getting the right reactions at
the right time. Fulton is
usually the underdog in his matches, but in this case he gets the win in
a very entertaining match. SECOND
EVENT Paul
Jones & Nelson Royal vs. Ray Stevens & Jimmy Snuka
A
great tag team match (you'll see a few more of these, as tag team
wrestling flourished for many years in JCP) is our second event.
Not many people realize that Jones and Royal were one of MACW's
better tag teams in the 60's. Although
somewhat small in stature, they made up for it with their tenacity in
the ring. And, Stevens
& Snuka had a solid run as the JCP version of the NWA World Tag Team
Champions in 1980. This
match would feature the wild, brutal style of Stevens & Snuka
against the wrestling moves of Jones & Royal.
But, Paul Jones & Nelson Royal could also mix it up with the
brawlers! In fact, I see
the temper of either Paul Jones or Nelson Royal causing the faces to get
DQ'ed after an action packed match. THIRD
EVENT Ricky
Steamboat & Jay Youngblood vs. Rip Hawk & Swede Hanson This
match is one I would strongly recommend you watch.
Steamboat and Youngblood were one of JCP's greatest face teams,
and Hawk & Hanson one of the most despised.
The innovative moves of Ricky & Jay matched up against the
strength and cunning of "The Profile" and big Swede.
I would book this match with the heels using their usual
rule-breaking tactics and get many near falls.
But, after working over Youngblood for a while, Jay makes the hot
tag to Ricky. Steamboat
comes in and cleans house on both Hawk & Hanson, then a quick tag
back to Jay and as Hanson is lying prone on the mat, Steamboat does a
Gorilla Press with Jay and drops him on top of Swede for the pin! FOURTH
EVENT-MID ATLANTIC TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP (CLAW VERSUS CLAW!) Baron
Von Raschke vs. Blackjack Mulligan
Both
of these men will battle any opponent tooth-and-nail for the entire
match. Add
in the fact that they both use the Claw hold, plus the prestigious Mid
Atlantic TV title on the line and this match would be a top attraction
in any city. Although both men have been both a face and heel
during their careers, this match will mostly be a slugfest with little
resemblance to a mat-wrestling event. Both men get the opportunity
to use the Claw on each other, but neither results in a victory. I
see a ref bump here, and der Baron using the title belt to KO Mulligan.
Then as the ref starts to regain consciousness, Raschke
"applies" his Claw to the prone Mulligan and the ref does the
obligatory lifting-of-the-hand three times. Baron Von Raschke has
retained his MA TV title in dubious fashion!
