- Kris Zellner This month we will look at the year 1981 in the Mid-Atlantic area where change was on the horizon in a lot of ways and the territory was never the same. It was a year when stars were born, stars were made, and a man named Ric Flair won his 1st NWA World Heavyweight Title. January 1981- Ivan Koloff and the Iron Sheik had a falling out in a televised tag team match and started fighting as the show went off of the air. This led to a brief series of matches between the two and Koloff would carry a shovel to the ring saying that he was going to "bury" the Sheik. This was also strange at the time, because you rarely saw a heel vs. heel feud. January 11th 1981- Harley Race retains his NWA World title by defeating Ric Flair in Greensboro, North Carolina January 27th 1981- Roddy Piper defeats Ric Flair for the U.S. title in one of the great matches in their feud in Raleigh, North Carolina. February 7th 1981- Mr. Fuji and Genichiro Tenryu defeat Dewey Robertson and George Wells to capture the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team belts in Greensboro, North Carolina. February 22nd 1981- Ray Stevens and Ivan Koloff defeat Paul Jones and The Superstar for the NWA World Tag Team titles in Greensboro, North Carolina. March 22nd 1981- Exactly one month later, Jones and The Superstar defeat Koloff and Stevens to regain the NWA Tag belts in Greensboro, North Carolina. April 1981- A big change occurs in JCP as George Scott decides to leave the territory and his job as the head booker to go to Atlanta and work for Jim Barnett and GCW. Oddly enough, the man who replaced Scott was Ole Anderson who was one of the creative minds for GCW. When Ole came back, Gene wasn’t too far behind and the Minnesota Wrecking Crew was back after a 3+ year absence. April 3rd 1981- Harley Race went to a time limit draw against Roddy Piper for the NWA World title in Richmond, Virginia. April 5th 1981- Harley Race retains his NWA title again by defeating Ric Flair in Roanoke, Virginia. More...
