- Kris Zellner This month we will look at Jack and Jerry Brisco and their very successful careers in the Mid-Atlantic area. Jack first appeared in the Carolinas in 1971 and a year later Jerry followed him into the area. Jack won the Eastern States title in 1971 and held it for a few months until Rip Hawk defeated him for the belt. Jerry, who had been half of the Mid-Atlantic tag champs with Thunderbolt Patterson, defeated Hawk on March 3rd, 1973 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the title and held it for two reigns, where during his second reign the belt was renamed the Mid-Atlantic title. Jerry was stripped of his belt in January 1974 for going on an extended tour of Japan. Jack on the other hand had won the NWA World title from Harley Race on June 20th, 1973 in Houston, Texas and made frequent defenses of his title in the area throughout his two reigns spanning over two-and-a-half years. Jack and Jerry returned to the Mid-Atlantic area in December 1981 to wrestle in the NWA World Tag Title tourney and they were defeated in the Eastern Division finals by the team of Ole Anderson and Stan Hansen. Jerry went on back to Florida and spending time in Atlanta because he was part owner of the promotion, meanwhile Jack stayed in the Mid-Atlantic area and started a feud with Roddy Piper for the Mid-Atlantic title. Jack and Roddy had a lot of great confrontations in the ring, at the interview stand on TV and in one match, Jack put up $10,000 against Piper’s title and Piper nailed Jack with a roll of coins to retain the belt and "win" Jack’s money. Jack got his revenge though on May 10th 1982 when he won the title from Piper in Greenville, South Carolina. Piper regained the belt on July 7th 1982, but lost it back to Jack on August 3rd 1982 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jack went on to defend the belt around the area for a month and defended the title against fellow babyface Paul Jones on TV on September 1st 1982. It started out scientifically, but Jones turned heel on Brisco by hitting him with a karate thrust to the throat and he won the belt. Jack and Paul traded the belt around for a couple of months until Jack regained it in November where also in that month, Jerry Brisco came back into the area. 1983 started out on a bad note for Jack, when he lost the Mid-Atlantic title to Dory Funk Jr. on January 23rd in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jack went on to feud with Funk for a little while until the bookers decided to put Jack and Jerry back together as a team. Jack and Jerry went on to get a match on TV with the NWA World Tag champs (Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood) in April 1983 and the match was a great one. More...
